Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary

About - Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its rich flora and fauna; however the natural beauty of this region is equally impressive. The National Park is located in Iddukki district of Kerala. The park is spread over an area of 97 Km2. It amazes every visitor by the panoramic views of the nature it offers. Picturesque grasslands, spectacular high rolling hill plateau, perennial streams and specially the Lakkom Waterfalls increase the beauty of this place. The river Periyar is the main water resource of the Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary.

Flora and fauna The main vegetation in this national park is grasslands, shrub lands and the rain forests. The fauna of Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary Kerala boasts of 26 different species of mammals which include famous Nilgiri Thar, Gaur, Indian Muntjac, Sambar, Golden Jackal, Jungle cat, Dhole, small clawed otter, Ruddy Mangoose, Leopards, Tigers and most important of all - the Elephants. Apart from this there are about 132 species of birds that are found here that include Black and Orange Fly catcher, Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Wood pigeon, hornbill etc. 101 species of butterflies and 19 species of amphibians have also been recorded in this park.

Activities The major activities that tourists enjoy here are trekking, camping, fishing and bird watching.

How to reach ?

By Air - The nearest Airport to Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is Kochi International Airport which is at a distance of 135 Kms.

By Train - The nearest railhead is Angamaly which is at a distance of 120 km from Munnar. This is an important railways junction that connects you to many major South Indian cities.

By Road - You can get both private and public bus services to Eravikulam from Munnar. This is the cheapest way to reach here.

Best time to visit - This is the place that you can visit throughout the year and during summers the temperature is most pleasant here.
